OSCAR CLASS SUBMARINE

The nuclear submarine depict on this stamp is one of the Project 949A (Antey) of which 11 were built, 5 were assigned to the Soviet Northern Fleet, and 6 to the Soviet Pacific Fleet.
All units were built by Sevmash. in Severodvinsk and commissioned between 1986 and 1997.
The lead ship of this class was the K-148 ORENBURG.
One of this class was the unlucky KURSK who was lost on 12 August 2000 with all hands in the Barents Sea. She was salvaged on 08 October 2001, but not again in service.

The class was known by the NATO as the Oscar II class.
Displacement 13.900 tons surfaced, 18.300 tons dived. Dim. 154 x18.2 x 9m. draught.
Powered by 2 pressurized water-cooled reactors each 190 MW, given power to 2 steam turbines 98.000 shp, twin shafts, speed 15 knots surfaced, 28 knots dived.
Armament: 24 Graniet SS-N-19 missiles, in two banks of 12 tubes. 4 – 533mm, and 2 – 650mm. torpedo tubes, placed all in the bow.
Endurance 50 days
Crew 107.

Three of this class are laid up, waiting for disposal, the other units still in active service.
