ELMA, RIO VESSELS

1977 Argentine issued a stamp of 60+30 Pesos with two ships on it, the lower vessel till today not identified, but the modern vessel has been identified by Mr. Mario Rosner as one of the vessels of the Emp. Lineas Maritimes Argentinas (ELMA).
Together with a retired ex captain of ELMA they give the vessel depict is one of the RIO vessels completed between 1974 – 1977 for the company on an Argentinean yard.
The class of ships was known as ELMA III by the company.

In this time 5 vessels were built: RIO DESEADO, RIO IGUAZU, RIO GUALEGUAY, RIO ESQUEL and RIO OLIVA.

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No 39 by Astileros y Fábricas Navales del Estado (A.F.N.E.), Ensenada, Buenos Aires for ELMA.
19 December 1975 launched under the name RIO DESEADO.
Tonnage 9.059 grt, 5.100 net, 10.070 dwt. Dim. 147.60 x 20.20 x 11.80m., length bpp. 138.0m.
Cargo capacity 11.641m³ general cargo and 2.548m³ reefer cargo.
Powered by 7-cyl Fiat diesel, manufactured by A.F.N.E. , 10.500 hp., one screw, speed 18 knots.
1974 completed.

1989 Renamed GIANNIS N.K. and under Cyprus flag and registry.
1993 Sold to Priceless Marine Co. Ltd., Cyprus, renamed LEON K.
26 April 1995 sold by auction at Vlissingen (Flushing) to Charmaine Nav. Inc., St Vincent, renamed SIBA.
1998 Renamed in STAR I.
1999 Sold to Kira Nav.Inc., Panama, renamed BALTIC SEA.
1999 Sold to Demtas A.S. Aliaga, Turkey and beached there on 01 May 1999 for scrapping.

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No. 40 by Astilleros y Fabricas Navales del Estado (A.F.N.E.), Ensenada, Buenos Aires, Argentine for ELMA.
12 May 1973 launched under the name RIO IGUAZU.
Same details as RIO DESEADO.
1975 Completed.

1988 Sold to unknown Panamanian owners and renamed FORTIORES.
The same year sold by this owners to Market Shipping Co. Ltd, Cyprus, renamed SYMPHONY II.
1989 Sold to Heliopolis Shipping Co., Egypt, renamed HELIOPOLIS SPRING.
2002 Sold to Turkish breakers, and made her last voyage under the name SPRING, arrived 23 May 2002 at Aliaga, Turkey, she was scrapped there by Kalkavanlar A.S.

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No 41 by A.F.N.E. for ELMA.
02 February 1974 launched under the name RIO GUALEGUAY.
Details the same as RIO DESEADO.
1976 Completed.

1989 Sold to Exercise Shipping Co. Ltd., Cyprus and renamed FANTASY.
1994 Sold to J.L.Enterprise, Bhatiary, Bangladesh where she arrived on 30 June 1994 for breaking up.

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No. 139 by Astilleros Astarsa S.A., Tigre, Buenos Aires for ELMA.
15 December 1973 launched under the name RIO ESQUEL.
Details same as RIO DESEADO.
1976 Completed.

1992 Sold to Status Shipping Co. Ltd., Cyprus and renamed AUDACITY.
1993 Renamed by owners in CITY.
1994 Sold to Marinoblos Marine Service, Egypt, renamed SIR AHMED.
1995 Renamed by owners in DALIA, under Honduras registry and flag.
1996 Sold to Elahi Shipping Ltd., St Vincent, renamed VOYAGER.
Most probably the name was only used for her last voyage to the breakers yard.
She was broken up in Sachana, India where she arrived on 10 October 1996.

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No. 140 by Astilleros Astarsa S.A., Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentine for ELMA.
19 December 1975 launched under the name RIO OLIVIA.
Details same as RIO ESQUEL.
1977 completed.

1988 Sold to Market Shipping Co. Ltd., Cyprus and renamed MELODY.
1990 Sold to Pan. Islamic S.S.Co. Ltd, Pakistan and renamed SAFINA-E-ISMAIL 2.
30 November 1995 she had sustained serious generator problems off Cimarron Island south of Manila.
22 December 1995 towed to Manila.
10 May 1996 moved to Cebu for cargo discharge and repair, but not much repair was done, later reported that she was under arrest.
2000 Sold to Regency Projects Ltd., Belize, renamed SAFI.

2000 http://www.equasis.org gives IMO No. 7345978, out of service and still under the name SAFINA-E-ISMAIL 2.

So it looks she is still laid up in Cebu.
23 January 2000 sold as a derelict in Cebu and broken up.
