On the 12p is the lifeboat ELIZABETH RIBBON depict during the rescue of the crew of the ketch rigged merchant vessel HANNA in the night of 19 November 1949.
Built as Watson designed lifeboat by J.S.White for the R.N.L.I.
Launched under the name ELIZABETH RIBBON.
Dim. 46.9 x 12.9ft.
Two 40 bhp. each Ferry VE4 diesel engines.
Was the first of this class fitted out with a deck cabin and amidships steering.
1966 Re-engined with a Barracuda 65hp. engine.
1948 Completed.
The ELIZABETH RIPPON sailed out from St Helier, Jersey after flares were seen between Grosnez Point and the island Sark.
The ship in distress was the 76 tons merchant schooner HANNA from Poole, with on board a crew of 3 men, who had grounded 1 km from L’Etacq.
When the lifeboat arrived near the HANNA high seas and breakers made the approach to the wreck very dangerous, only a small passage made it possible to approach the wreck from the north-west. With the help of the search-light the lifeboat managed to enter the passage, during the approach to the wreck the ELIZABETH RIPPON hit an underwater rock, but managed to come alongside to rescue the three men of the HANNA.
Exceptional achievements at sea by the crew are recorded in the annals of the R.N.L.I. also extraordinary circumstances of the courage of acting Coxswain Silver Le Riche and his crew were noted in the annals.
Entering and passing the small passage by daylight is al very courageous, but to do it by night and with the help only of a search-light is heroic. For this Le Riche was awarded the Bronze Medal of the R.N.L.I.
Till so far not found more on the HANNA.
The lifeboat ELIZABETH RIPPON arrived at 14th October 1948 at St Helier, and during her career as lifeboat she carried out 141 services, which included 57 searches and rescued 6 craft and 66 people.
