BAC DE L'UNITE ferry

In 1982 Djibouti issued a set of three stamps and a MS on the theme of transport, one stamp shows the ferry BAC DE L’UNITE.

The MS which shows the same ship, and in the margins of the sheet are a 6 further vessels: The QUEEN ELIZABETH 2, a small African craft and a supertanker which might have been operated by Shell judging by the funnel colours. Mr Dan Rodlie gives that she is the MARINULA the same image is on the front and back cover of the book- Ships through the ages published in 1972.

The other three vessels are the US riverboat DELTA QUEEN, the motor yacht LA BELLE SIMONE and the tug HELEN McALLISTER

Built as a ferry under yard No 637 by Friedrich Krupp GmbH Ruhrorter Schiffswerft, Duisburg, Germany for the Government of the Republic of Djibouti.
Launched as the BAC DE L’UNITE.
Tonnage 500 grt, 50 dwt, dim. 46.51 x 11.51 x 1.001m. (draught).
Powered by two 6-cyl. Deutch Oil 4SA, 1,500 bhp., speed ?
1980 Completed.

There are only two forms of public inter-city travel: by bus and by a ferry operating between L’escale in Djibouti City and the towns of Tadjourch and Obock on the northeast coast of the Gulf of Tadjoura.
The trip takes three hours, but the schedule is unpredictable.
She is registered in Djibouti.
2009 In service, same name and owners, IMO No. 8027640.
