J 5 submarine

Built as fast submarine by the Devonport Dockyard, Devonport for the Royal Navy.
26 April 1915 laid down.
09 September 1915 launched as the J5 one of the J class of which seven were built.
Displacement 1.210 tons surface, 1.820 tons submerged, dim. 84 x 7.01 x 4.29m. (draught).
Powered by three 12-cyl. Vickers diesels, 1.200hp each, 3 electric motors each 450 hp., fitted out with triple screws, speed 19.5 knots surface, submerged 9.5 knots.
Range surface 5.000 miles by a speed of 12.5 knots.
Diving depth 55 meter.
Armament: 1 – 3 inch deck gun, 6 – 18 inch torpedo tubes, four bow, 2 stern, carried 12 torpedoes.
Crew 5 officers, 39 men.
18 May 1916 commissioned under command of Comdr. Edward C. Boyle.

The British J class submarines were built under an emergency war program caused by an erroneous report that the German Navy had U-boats at sea or under construction capable of attaining speeds of 18 – 20 knots.
The Royal Navy was forced to design a fast submarine, and at that time she were the fastest in the world.

After commissioned attached to the submarine depot ship TITANIA in the 11th Flotilla at Blyth.
28 January 1919 offered to the Australian Royal Navy, and they accepted this on 08 February.
25 March 1919 six F class submarines were transferred to the RAN, under which the J5.
In the RAN her two stern tubes and the 3 inch deck gun were removed.
After arrival in Australia it was found that the class was in a poor condition and needed immediately a refit which was carried out at Sydney.
She was based at Geelong, Victoria.
12 July 1922 paid off into reserve at Westernport.
26 February 1924 sold to Melbourne Salvage Syndicate.
04 July 1926 her hull was scuttled 3 miles off Barwon Heads, Australia.
