D 1 was the prototype of this class, and this class of submarines were capable of operating significantly beyond coastal waters, and there design was evolved from the C Class boats.
This class were the first British submarines fitted out with a diesel engine, she were designed for overseas patrols. It was also the end of the petrol engine used in submarines.
Also she was fitted out with a radio. The aerial was attached to the mast of the conning tower and had to be lowered by hand before diving.
The D Class submarines were considered to be so innovative, that the prototype D1 was built in utmost secrecy in a securely guarded building shed. She was launched at Barrow with equal secrecy, with only departmental heads and a few officers of the cruiser HMS MERCURY, which was currently in dock being present.
Once moved to the fitting out berth, she was once again screened from view.

Her service career not well known, all this boats in this class were stationed on the East coast of England during World War I, and her long endurance made her the perfect boats for patrols in the North Sea.

23 October 1918 sunk as a target.
