Remarks: Design is a slightly modified version of the "long-hulled" U.S. Navy Oliver Hazard Perry class. Named for Chinese maritime heroes. Construction of the first two aided by "kits" supplied by Bath Iron Works, which also provided technical assistance in constructing the others. Detail design by Gibbs & Cox.
Originally only four were to have been built to the basic design, but development of the phased-array radar and vertically launched SAM for the Batch II, updated variant lagged, and the Batch II program was canceled altogether in October 1994. Are all assigned to the 124th Frigate
Squadron. Funds to construct the eighth unit were provided in the 1999 Budget; the ship had earlier been canceled in October 1994 and was to be re- ordered during January 1999, but the actual contract was delayed to December 2000.

Hull systems: Have fin stabilizers, rudder roll-control, and the Prairie/Masker acoustic sound signature reduction air-bubble generation system.

Combat systems: The U.S. Norden Systems SYS-2(V)2 sensor data fusion system is installed, as is the Vitro Cando off-the-shelf computerized data system, which assists the Mk 92 weapons control system. A RAST helicopter hold-down and transfer system is fitted. CHI KUANG (1105)
was the first of the class to have a data link, backfitted into the earlier pair. The Hsiung Feng II missiles are carried in box launchers atop the superstructure, abaft they bridge; they are launched by a U.S. Hughes- supplied missile control system that can also control the 40-mm guns. The 40-mm mounts cannot be manned when the 76-mm gun is firing, due to blast effects. The 20-mm guns are modified M-39 aircraft cannon and are mounted atop the hangar
(flanking the Phalanx) and forward of the Mk 92 f.c.s. radome. The towed sonar array will not be installed until later; the EDO system offered would incorporate an AMSP2 processor, while the Thales system would have both active and passive capabilities. To be used by the Mk13 launcher, 71 RGM-84L Harpoon Block II missiles were requested from the U.S.A. for this class in September2000; they will replace the Hsiung Feng II launchers, which will be mounted ashore for coastal defense and aboard Jing Jiang–class patrol combatants.
