Built by Werft Nobiskrug at Rendsburg in 1958. Dimensions; 298'7" x 46'1" x 20'11 3/4", Grostonnage; 2,648, netton; 1,333, dwt; 3,045. Main propulsion engine is a 5-cyl. B. & W. Diesel with cylinder diam. 500 mm x 1,100 mm stroke, driving a controllable pitch propeller. Speed; 14 knots. Bunker capacity 530 tons of diesel fuel.

She was built to the highest specifications, and is especially strengthened for ice. Registered at Esbjerg, Denmark.

She took part in the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in 1960 under Guido Derom. Captain of Erika Dan was Leo Christiaensen, and Christiaensen Glacier named after this captain.

She was sold in 1973 by J. Lauritsen, Denmark, to Rasheed Enterprises, Sharjah. Renamed Al Riaz and registered at Sharjah.

During her first voyage for her new owners from Tees to Mauritius, and the Persian Gulf, she foundered off the Spanish Coast in position 44.37 N-8.54 W after developing a leak. Her crew was saved.
