First stamp to feature a ship

Post by lestermay » Fri May 11, 2012 1:28 pm

I am a former naval officer (Lieutenant-Commander RN) and now naval historian. I am compiling a Naval and Maritime Chronology and an Index of Flag Officers.

It would be good to add entries related to ships on stamps - I am no philatelist, although I have a few ship stamps in my collections of nautical material - and I would value advice of collectors. For example:

Q1 - Which was the first ever postage stamp to feature a ship?
Q2 - Which was the first ever postage stamp to feature one of HM Ships?
Q3 - Which was the first ever postage stamp to feature an admiral?
Q4 - Which was the first ever postage stamp to feature a British naval officer?
Q5 - Have any countries with no coastline featured ships on stamps?
Q6 - Has naval aviation featured on stamps - which was the first?

That's more than enough to start. I would value your thoughts. I will happily follow up leads, of course, as I not asking others to do the work for me - but I do need a "starter for ten" so to speak.

Many thanks,

Maybe you may, however, find a preferable stamp display method among the ideas discussed.. :)
