TYPHOON CLASS SUBMARINE

This class as depict on this Russian stamp is on of project 941, Russian name Akula (Shark), under the NATO name known as Typhoon.
She is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine and deployed by the Russian Navy, in the Northern Fleet in Arctic waters
It is till now the largest undersea vessels ever built.
Six units were built and the 7th is cancelled but partly built.

All units were built at the Sevmash yard at Severodvinsk, near Arkhangel, and the design is from the Rubin Design Bureau.
The first unit later named DMITRY DONSKOY was laid down on 3 March 1977.
23 September 1980 launched under No TK-208.
Displacement 23.200-24.500 tons surfaced, 33.800-48.000 submerged. Dim. length 170-172, beam 23 -23.3, draught 11 – 11.5m.
Powered by 2 OK-650 pressurized water cooled reactors 254.750shp, and 2 steam turbines, 50.000 shp, twin shafts, speed 12 – 16 knots submerged, 25 – 27 knots submerged.
Diving depth 500 meter.
Armament D19 launch tubes for 20 R-39 missiles. 2 – 650mm and 4 -533mm torpedo tubes.
Endurance 150 days.
Crew 150 -175.
12 December 1981 commissioned.

Altogether 6 submarines were completed between 1981 – 1989, the class was special built to be used in the Arctic ice pack, she has reinforced sail-guard and sails, advanced stern fin, horizontal hydroplane fitted aft of the screws and retractable bow hydroplanes which allows the type easily to break through weak spots in the Arctic ice.

After commissioned a unit of the First Atomic Flotilla based at Neyerpichya, Northern Russia.

All of this class are now most probably decommissioned except the DMITRY DONSKOY, after a decade of refit, again commissioned in 2002, and used as a Bulava missile test platform for the new Bulava missile.
