Banjul (car ferry)

Post by john sefton » Thu Jun 03, 2010 4:26 pm

The ferry boat BANJUL was built at Germersheim shipyard, on the river Rhine. She was apparently built in 1977 as she was delivered at the port of Banjul in February 1978. She displaces 318 tons and is 35 metres o.a., x 10.35 metres extreme beam, x 2.95 metres depth. Her loaded draft is 2 metres. She can carry 6 cars, one heavy vehicle, and 240 passengers. There is a deck house on each side of the hull and these are bridged by the pilot house. There is an engine room on each side, each with a kelvin diesel engine, and these give a total of 345 h.p. There are two schottel-rudderpropellers, one forward and one aft. She takes 30 minutes to make the run between Banjul and Barra (on the river Gambia). Her sister ship NIUMI entered service in June 1979.
