VERONICA stern trawler

Built as factory stern trawler under yard 174 by FEAB at Marstrand and completed by Th. Hellesøy Skibsbyggeri, Løfallstrand, Norway for Kevin Liam McHugh at Killybegs, Ireland.
05 May 1987 launched under the name VERONICA.
Tonnage 4.034 gross, 1.210 net, 3.000 dwt., dim. 90.0 x 15.00 m.
Powered by one Wärtsila-Wichmann 12V32D engine, 6.040bhp, one shaft speed 17 knots.
November 1987 completed.

She was classified as a “midwater” (pelagic) trawler the “flagship” in the Irish fishing fleet.
She made big headlines when delivered.

During a refit at Harland and Wolff in Belfast, fire broke out on 08 June 1992 and she suffered major damage.
1993 Declared a constructive total loss.
For about a year the ship was tied up in Belfast, before she was taken over by the builders Hellesøy Skibsbyggeri A/S at Løfallstrand, towed to the yard, where plans were made to rebuild her for their own account. She was renamed HELLESØY. The whole transaction was part of a refinancing of a new ship for McHugh at Killybegs.
A new “supper trawler” was delivered by the yard to McHugh in December 1994 under the name VERONICA (II).
1993 VERONICA (I) resold to Thor Ostervolds Rederi, Oslo, for which she is being reconditioned into a research vessel for delivery September 1994.
1994 Sold to Shipman A.S. Norway, Norway International Register (NIS), renamed ATLANTIC EXPLORER.
After her conversion in a research vessel, her tonnage is given as 4.639 gross, 1.392 net., dim. 91.3 x 17.4 x 10.2m., draught 7.0m., length bpp 71.3m.
Registry port Bergen, Norway.

2011 Is she owned by PGS Shipping, Isle of Man, registered under Bahamas flag with homeport Nassau, and managed by PGS Geophysical AS. Lysaker, Norway. IMO No. 8610667.
