LEITH paddle steamer 1837

Built as a paddle steamer by the yard of R. Menzies & Sons at Leith for the General Steam Navigation Co., (CNS) London. Official No. 476.
06 April 1837 launched.
Tonnage 494 tons burthen (old rules) 907 gross, 568 net. (an other source gives 792 gross, 495 net.) Dim. 181 x 27.2 x 18.4ft.
Steamengine of 300 hp, wooden paddle wheels.
Designed to mount 3 guns.
Berths for 70 1st class and 36 2nd class passengers.
At that time she was the largest steam vessel built.

18 May 1837 registered under No 1837/173 at London.
Used for the coastal service of the GSN.
26 February 1839 her tonnage given as 568 tons burthen (new rules) Dim. 182 x 27.2 x 18.4ft. Owner GNS.
1845 Her engines given as 240 hp.
1857 Fitted out with a new topside.
01 October 1863 register closed with the remark, “broken up”.

She ran regular between Leith and London, and there is not any evidence that she ever has left the English coastal/cross Channel waters.
