In 1981 the Isle of Man issued a set of 5 stamps featuring maritime paintings by the well-known Manx artists, J.H. Nicholson (1911-1988).
The issues jointly commemorates “Fishermen’s Year” and the Centenary of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen.

Since the earliest times, fishing has been an important occupation of the Manx people, providing a basic food for them. Even the laws of the island reflects this in that the Deemsters (Judges) still have to promise to execute the laws of Man “ as indifferently as the herring back-bone doth lie in the midst of the fish”.

In the early 19th century the Manx fishermen received competition from the better equipped Cornish and Irish craft, forcing then to improve their equipment and increase their efforts. Accordingly, boat and net manufacturing industries benefitted greatly. In this century, the fishing industry has met with fluctuating success.

In these difficult times, the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen provides helpful service to members of the fishing fraternity and their families. The patronage of Queen Elizabeth II is a measure of the esteem and recognition in which the Mission held.

On the 8p stamp is depict a “lugger”. During the 1830s, this style of fishing boat evolved by cutting down the length of the main boom, where after a mizzen mast was placed, setting a small lugsail on it. It increased the speed of the lugger.
In the 1840’s the tonnage was 12 – 18 ton; by 1864 15 – 25 tons.
In the 1870’s nickeys practically superseded the luggers.

For the bicentennial of William Wordsworth the Isle of Man issued a set of stamps of which one shows us a painting made by John Holland with Peel luggers under sail.
The painting is in the Manx Museum in Douglas.
The painting shows us fishing luggers at sea under sail.
