CARAVEL LATINA

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Jun 20, 2011 8:41 pm

The Caravel Latina depict on this two stamps issued by Mozambique originates from the “Cáravo of the Moors”, a small vessel which sailed along the east coast of the Mediterranean.
The CARAVEL is already mentioned in the 13th century, but mostly described as a vessel of the 15th to early 17th century.
The first caravels were used for fishing and undecked except for a covered space forward, which set a single lateen sail.
There were one, two and three masted CARAVELS, and later she was adopted for the discovery voyages of the Spanish and Portuguese.
She was an extremely light vessels with a shallow draft, lateen rigging. This made it possible to sail with all wind directions.
