TRIREME

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Feb 03, 2012 8:59 pm

The TRIREME was a fast light oared ship-of-the-line used by the Mediterranean countries.
Around the 6th or 7th century BC the design of galleys changed. Shipbuilders most probably from Phoenicia added a second deck above the first, creating the BIERE or BIREME, then a third deck was added, and this became known as a TRIREME.
The first time the TRIREME was named is by Herodotus, he mentions that Polycrates, tyrant of Samos from 535 BC till 515 BC, had TRIREMES in his fleet in 539 BC.
This type had her height in the Mediterranean navies during the 4th-5th centuries BC; continued into the medieval period.
She was rowed from 3 levels by as many as 150 oarsmen.
Two-pronged ram projected forward at the waterline for use in naval operations; the Romans also employed catapults. Probably flat-bottomed, straight-sided both longitudinally and vertically. Sternpost curved up and recurved in high arc.
Cables running fore-and-aft provided strengthening.
Maneuvered by twin quarter rudders, manned single banked. Crew slept and ate ashore.
An auxiliary sail set when conditions permitted.
Athenian vessels 37 meter long 5 meter wide with a crew of around 200.
