The hull was built under yard No 005 by Aker MTW Werft GmbH, Wismar and fitted out by the Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven for the Norwegian Cruise Line.

29 September 2000 floated out of the building dock under the name NORWEGIAN SUN. one of the Sky-class of the Norwegian Cruise Line.
Tonnage 78,309 grt, 7,100 dwt. Dim. 258.5 x 32.97 x 7.92m. (draught). Length bpp. 223.1m.
Powered; Diesel electric by 3 MAN-B&W 7L58/64, 68,933 hp, connected to 3 MAN & B&W alternators, three shafts, speed 23 knots.
Accommodation for 2,002 passengers, maximum 2,400, crew 968.
31 August 2001 delivered to owners, building cost US 332 million.
Home port Nassau, Bahamas.

After delivery sailed to Miami were she official was christened on 17 November 2001 by the USA actress Brooke Burke.
She was the last vessel of this class for the Norwegian Cruise Line.
She is used for cruises from the USA to the Caribbean, and during the Northerly summers placed in cruises in the Northern European waters.
