Phoebe 1851 (Union Castle)

Post by shipstamps » Sun Jun 15, 2008 4:12 pm

The Phoebe was built in 1851 by Denny at Dumbarton for the South American service of Preston and Company, and was acquired by the Union Line in January 1858, for their South African service. She made her first voyage to Cape Town six days under the contract time and established a reputation as a very fast ship. As a result of this speculators bought her for the purpose of running the American blockade during the Civil War. While she was at Bermuda, a short time afterwards, she was purchased for the inter-Colonial service between Australia and New Zealand. She left for Sydney, putting in for repairs at Table Bay, in April 1863. She changed hands frequently afterwards, her career ending in 1901 when she was made into a hulk and finally broken up. The Phoebe was a vessel of 613 tons.
Although the stamps show the Dane, the vessel depicted is, in fact, the Phoebe.

There is some confusion re stamps showing Dane; which ship is llustrated? As far as I can gather (mainly from Duncan Haws profiles) Dane was a Topsail schooner rigged fore and aft with square topsails on the foremast. As you can see the ship on the St Helena 13p/Ascension 70p and the S.A. stamp clearly fits this description, whereas the 8d St Helena shows a vessel with square Topsails on the main as well as Fore mast - this is Haws view of PHOEBE.So I conclude DANE is correctly shown on 3 stamps, the odd one out being St Helena SG242 which is PHOEBE.

Mr Baker is right the three last stamps on this site are of the DANE (see index) and must be removed from this site.

Sorry everyone, I don't know what happened there. The stamps have been deleted and many thanks to those who pointed out the error.
