MISCHIEF yacht built in 1906

Built as a wooden cutter by Thomas Baker at Cardiff for William Morgan a Bristol Channel pilot from Penarth.
Launched as MISCHIEF.
Gross weight 17.58 ton, displacement ca. 55 tons. Dim. 13.7 x 3.96 x 2.32m
Elliptical stern and carvel built. Built of oak and pine.
21 March 1906 registered at Cardiff, Wales.

These pilot cutters were sailed by two men crew and a pilot.
She was used by Morgan as a pilot cutter till the Cardiff Pilotage Authority decided to modernize the pilot service and ordered three steam cutters. The intention was to man the cutters by the pilots who had to work in shifts.
The Cardiff pilotage authority bought the MISCHIEF from Morgan on 14 November 1913.
05 August 1914 she was sold to pilot Arthur William Garret a pilot from Barry, when the Barry Pilotage Authority also bought a steam pilot cutter, Garret sold the MISCHIEF to the Barry Steam boat pilot company.

The MISCHIEF out of work was sold on 11 August 1919 to Percy John Nenry Unna from London who took the MISCHIEF to Takoradi on the African Gold Coast.
11 August 1927 her register was closed in Cardiff.

Most probably thereafter she was used as a sailing yacht between 1927 and 1954 she had nine owners before the well know British World War hero Bill Tilman got hold of her.
At that time the MISCHIEF was in Malta and Bill Tilman bought the yacht for his voyages to the Arctic and Antarctic waters.
At that time she had an auxiliary Perkins diesel engine
When he visited the French Southern and Antarctic Territories I could not find.
Tillman sailed the MISCHIEF more than 110.000 miles in his voyages to the Antarctic, Patagonia, and Arctic waters.

1968 She sank off Jan Mayen in position Lat. 71N.

Some French sources say she is the MISCHIEF built for the America Cup races in 1879 but that is wrong, she has never been in the Antarctic.

Nowadays a replica of the MISCHIEF is sailing the internet and gives plenty of info on her.

The 1p stamp features the explorer Bill Tilman and his yacht MISCHIEF. Bill Tilman was a well-known mountaineer who bought the pilot cutter MISCHIEF so that he could sail to the Arctic and Antarctic in search of unconquered mountains to climb. In 1966 he sailed to the South Shetland Islands and returned northwards via South Georgia. MISCHIEF was the first private yacht to visit South Georgia. Tilman went missing on a subsequent expedition to Antarctica when the yacht EN AVANT disappeared on the way to the Falkland Islands.
