Large double canoe that was primarily the property of kings and chiefs; used into the early 19th century. There was no difference in the hull design of the Wa'a Kaukahi and the Wa'a Kaulua. In many instances a single hull canoe was lashed to a second hull to create a double canoe. Hulls hewn from single logs that were generally about the same size, but when one was larger, the vessel was called a “ku'e'e”; the shorter hull placed to port. Sides verti¬cal; quick turn of the bilges to a rounded bottom. Bottom rocker toward ends, terminating in charac-teristic high, pointed end pieces, the bow pieces taller; a short spur projected aft from the dugout hull. Sides raised by washstrakes; ends decked with breakwater on foredeck; open waist might have a mat cover to protect cargo. Hulls placed close together, joined by 3-6 poles lashed to spreaders wedged into the hulls; narrow, light platform laid between the hulls. When paddled, crews sat on thwarts in each canoe. Also sailed; light, vertical mast stepped forward in the starboard hull; woven pandanus sail laced to the mast; boom vertical and curved, forming a triangular sail. . Used for transporting large amounts of cargo, for extended inter island trips or far off-shore fishing trips, the double canoe also served as troop transports in war. Early Western explorers described observing over 100 people on a 60 foot double canoe.
Lengths to 32.5m; average length 14.5m (larger hull), beam 0.57m, depth 1.0m, width across both hulls 2m.
