J Henry Dunant

Post by shipstamps » Fri Nov 21, 2008 6:36 pm

A most unusual ship stamp designs was issued by Holland in 1957 for the benefit of the Netherlands Red Cross Society for it depicts a projected vessel for the society, a welfare cruising craft. Only the roughly suggested outline of the ship from the first drawings are featured on the stamp. The rough drawing is of the J. Henry Dunant, the keel for which was laid on October 10, 1958 and she was launched on March 14, 1959. The cost of building amounted to about 11/2 million guilders. She is driven by two Stork-Ricardo oil engines and is a twin-screw vessel with a speed of 10'/2 knots, having two rudders at the stern and one at the bow. On deck she carries a motorboat for transport and towing if required and a Red Cross ambulance. There are four wards with 70 beds, which in time of need can be increased by 100 beds. She is intended for passages with bedridden invalids and can be used in eventualities as a distress-hospital ship, evacuation ship, etc.

Built as an inland hospital ship under yard No 548 by Scheepswerf H.H. Bodewes, Millingen, Netherlands for the Nederlandse Rode Kruis (Dutch Red Cross), Den Haag.
07 June 1957 the building contract was signed.
10 October 1958 keel laid down.
14 March 1959 launched under the name J HENRY DUNANT.
Tonnage 68 ton, dim. 64.56 x 8.20 x 1.74m. (draught).
Two Storck Ricardo oil engines each 260hp, twin screws. Two stern rudders and one bow.
Carried a motorboat for transport, towing and as use as an ambulance, when needed.
Four wards with a total of 72 beds, what could be increased when needed to 100 beds.

01 June 1959 she made her first trip, mostly a week trip with long-term ill and disabled people over the Dutch inland waterways, I have seen her regular on the waters in the Province Friesland.
In use till 1983 when a new vessel came in service, also named J HENRY DUNANT.

1983 Sold to Varende Recreatie Nationale Stichting, Utrecht, Netherlands, renamed PRINS WILLEM ALEXANDER, named after the crown prince of the Netherlands.
In use as a cruise vessel in the same roll for long-term and disabled people.
When in 2003 a new vessel came in service the PRINS WILLEM ALEXANDER was sold in March 2003 to Austria.
At that time she had two Volvo diesel engines each 400 hp., so during her career the engines had been changed.
Sold in March 2003 to Austria, is not true, she was sold to a market gardener in Noord Holland with the intention to refit her in a floating accommodation vessel for his personal, but this did not happen.
2006 Sold to Prinsenland Partyschepen B.V. Dinteloord, Netherland and between 2006-2008 complete refitted in a party-ship for 250 persons. She was renamed in PRINSENLANDER.
2014 Sold to Rondvaart Europe B.V., Maassluis, Netherland.
From 14 April 2014 used as harbour cruise boat for trips of 90 minutes on the Nieuwe Waterweg and Europoort. Can also be chartered for functions.

2020 In service same name and owners ENI 02310503.

The Netherland stamp depicts the ship not yet under construction from the roughly suggested outline in the first drawing.
