SOUTH AFRICAN MERCHANT.
Cargo Built 1955 Fairfield·SB Co. Glasgow for South African Marine Corp., Cape Town. 9866Gt 5966Nt. L492'4" B62'10" Dr29'. Two steam turbines, single screw, 15 knots. 12 passengers. On left of stamp. Name changed 1966 to S A Merchant. Scrapped in 1977 after 22 years in Safmarine colours.-

SOUTH AFRICAN Merchant: built as a cargo vessel under yard No 761 by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Comp. Ltd., Greenock, Scotland for Global Marine Transport Ltd., Panama, on behalf of Skibs A/S Akersviken, C Gorrissen & Klaveness A/S.
1954 Keel laid as SEFRA.
14 December 1954 launched as SOUTH AFRICAN MERCHANT for the South African Marine Corporation, Cape Town, South Africa.
Tonnage 9,517 gross, 5.814 net, 12,100 dwt., dim. 149.6 x 19.1 x 11.55m., length bpp. 140.2m.
Two Parson type steam turbines manufactured by shipbuilder, 7,500 shp., double reduction geared to one shaft, speed 15 knots.
10 May 1955 completed.
1966 Renamed in S A MERCHANT.
24 April 1977 accommodation converted for training cadets at sea.
31 May 1977 arrived from Durban at Kaohsiung, Taiwan for demolition.
She was scrapped by Chi Shun Hwa Steel Co.
