In 1987 the Soviet Union issued a set of three stamps which depicted inland passenger-ships.
The 30k depict the SOVETSKY SOYUZ.

She was a Project 20 inland passenger ship, of which two have been built.
The design plans began in the thirties for this Volga River three-decked passenger ship.
21 October 1932 the newspaper Izvestia published a report on a competition for the best design for a passenger ship on the Volga River. The winner of the design was the engineer-shipbuilder V.I. Sergeev.
Five years later the development of the new ship began and in 1937 the design plans were completed, three variants of the vessel were developed, which differed only in the power plant, diesel, diesel-electric or turbo-electric.
But due to World War II the construction never started. After the war in the 1950s, the plans of the thirties was taken as a basis after and significantly revised by the shipbuilder Krasnoye Sormovo yard and as a result, a virtually new type was created, significantly different of the first design plans.
It was decided to build ships powered diesel-electric.
The first ship was the LENIN on a stamp of 1981 4k sg5143 and 1980 sg 2490 viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6972 was laid down by the Krasnoye Sormovo yard and launched in the autumn of 1958, the second was the SOVETSKY SOYUZ which was launched on the same yard in 1959.

After completing delivered to the Volga Shipping Company and operated on the fast passenger and tourist Volga River Lines.

SOVETSKY SOYUZ was taken out of service in 1996 and sold. The plan is by the new owner to restore her again to working condition, but I can’t find if this has happened.
