Walmer Castle (Union Castle)

Walmer Castle was originally laid down as the CELT(3) for the Union Line. Built by Harland & Wolff and launched on the 6th July 1901 her maiden arrival in Capetown was on 1st April, 1902.
She was requisitined as a troopship in April 1917 and was used to transport troops from the United States across the Atlantic. Walmer Castle was returned to her owners in 1919.
In January 1931 she was laid up at Netley and sold for breaking up which took place in February 1932.

Built in 1900-'02 by Harland & Wollf, Belfast, #342, as CELT for the Union Line, launched on 06-06-'01 as WALMER CASTLE, after the merger between the Union and Castle Lines.
Passenger ship, Gt:12.546, L:175,60m. B:19,60m. 4 H&W expansion engines:12.000 hp. 2 screws, 17½ kn. passengers 1st class:336, 2nd class:174, 3th class:244, crew:250.
On 15-03-'02 maiden voyage Southampton-Cape Town, 04-'17 requestined by British Ship Controller as a troopship, '19 returned to her owners, back in South Africa service.
'30 laid up in Southampton, '32 scrapped in Blyth.
