Geography
Horse ride is located southwest of Kirkjubøur on Streymoy , southeast of neighboring island Koltur and north of Sandoy . The shape is oblong and narrow and may resemble a horse - hence the name. There is only one village on the island: Hestur village.
The island reaches a fairly considerable height (421 m) and the upper part is a large flat area with several small lakes.
The entire west side consists of vertical bird cliffs with canyons and beach pellets. Álvastakkur. In the bird mountains there is a myriad of all kinds of seabirds. lomvier . See the birds of the Faroe Islands . In the old days, some bird-catching was done on the island, and in many places the fishing grounds were easy to reach. But the rock is severely weathered - and for approx. 200 years ago, there were landslides in several places on the island where whole bird cliffs crashed into the sea.
To the south are small lakes, among others. Fagradalsvatn and Hálsvatn. On the south coast is also the cave Klæmintsgjógv, where among other things. Kristian Blak has arranged trips to.

History
The island has been inhabited since the Viking times in the Faroe Islands or the early Middle Ages . The oldest settlement seems to be on the southern tip of the island, on the heel (heel). There are remnants of old buildings, and it is the sun's side of the island, so that grains mature better there than anywhere else on the island. But because it is almost impossible to fish from there, they have moved and settled on the east side where the village is now.
Just as on Skúvoy , the west side of the island is steep, and bird-catching was quite important in the old days, especially puffin .
The island is surrounded by good fishing waters and the residents are skilled fishermen. But this profession has also required many victims - thus in 1919, when two boats from the village lost one-third of all the island's fishermen.
The school in Hestur was built in 1890 , and the church in 1910 . In 1983 , the island got its own little swimming pool. The population was long at about 100, but today about 40 people live at Hestur.
In 1912 , a small jetty was built so that decked boats could dock in quiet weather.
Hestur and Koltur were separated as Hests municipality from Suðurstreymoyar priestly municipality in 1930 , after being separated as a separate parish from Kirkjubøur in 1920 . The municipality of Hest was incorporated into the municipality of Tórshavnar in 2005. A referendum was held in advance, and with 88% in attendance, all voted for Hestur for inclusion.
An actual quay was built in 1942 , and in 1965 a marina was built. In connection with the construction of a new ferry berth at Gamlarætt on the west side of Streymoy, much of the cliff had to be blown away. Part of this was transported across the fjord to Hestur and used for new port facilities there. This has been of great importance to the fishing and transport to the island.

Demographics
The island's scarce population is divided into 19 households. By the end of the 1990s, the municipality as a whole had the most employment in the fishery, with ten seamen, one trading company, one post office and three farmers.
