MOGAMI RIVER and the poet Matsho Bashö

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Dec 01, 2019 8:04 pm

30 May 1988 Japan issued a stamp that commemorates the haiku “The narrow road to the deep North” by Matsho Bashõ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsuo_Bash%C5%8D , the famous haiku poet of Japan.

The stamp shows us the Mogani River.
The Mogami River appears as an utamakura in Japanese poetry, with the influential 17th-century poet Matsuo Bashō composing several hokku regarding the river during his travels alongside it. Some were revised as haiku in the memoir of his journeys
Sailing on the river is a small riverboat which can carry 3-4 persons, wooden hull, the type is much like a “sampan”. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16009&p=18715&hilit=sampan+Japanese#p18715
