Built as wooden paddle yacht at the Pembroke Royal Navy Dockyard for Queen Victoria.
May 1854 laid down.
16 January 1855 launched under the name VICTORIA AND ALBERT, christened by Lady Milford, the intention was first to name her WINDSOR CASTLE but on December 1854 renamed.
Displacement 2.470 tons, dim. 329 x 40.3 x 16.3ft (draught). 69ft. over the sponsons.
Powered by a 2-cyl oscillating steam engine, 2.400 ihp., manufactured by Penn & Sons, speed 15 knots.
The Surveyor’s Department of the Admiralty designed the yacht and she was built under the superintendence of O.W. Laing, Master Shipwright.

The upper deck was covered with a new patent material-linoleum. The cabins below were covered in box pleated rosebud chintz. The doors were of fashionable birds eye ‘maple’ with ivory handles.
All the space from the paddle boxes aft was used as Royal accommodation. The dining room 24 by 17 feet and glazed all around was situated on the upper deck. Between the deck beams and the deck felt was laid as soundproofing.
When the Queen was on board, the crew wore soft-soled shoes, and most command were given by hand signals, to keep unwarranted noise to a minimum.
.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert often used her to many ports and out of the way places in the U.K., but the yacht was also used for cruises to the Mediterranean and other ports in Europe
When the Queen had Royal visitors she lent the yacht to the visitors for cruising.
1861 Prince Albert died and the yacht was thereafter principally used by the Queen in the British waters.
1869 VICTORIA AND ALBERT visited St Petersburg with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught aboard to attend the Czar’s coronation.
1888 She was fitted out with electric lights

1897 During Queen Victoria her Diamond Jubilee Review at Cowes, the yacht steamed through 5 lines of warships, the Queen herself was not on board, she was to infirm. She was staying at Osborne her home at the Island of Wight. On board were the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Empress of Germany and representatives of all the Royal house of Europe.

For 49 years she was Queen’s Victoria principal yacht.
