Accommodation for 60 people, (27 crew, 18 Shinkai 6500 flight personnel, and 15 researchers.)
10 April 1990 delivered to owners, IMO No 8711019. Homeport Yokusuka Port.

This ship was designed as a support mother ship for deep-sea submersible research vehicles responsible for the transportation and operation of the Shinkai 6500. The hull form is said to be a forecastle type with two decks. On the stern deck, there is a landing and unloading device for the Shinkai 6500, an A-frame crane that supports it, and a hangar with a maintenance facility at the rear end of the superstructure in front of it. An anti-rolling tank is provided under the upper deck to reduce rolling, and it is possible to land and unload the "Shinkai 6500" undersea conditions of Sea State 4 or less.
As the main engine, it is equipped with two Daihatsu 8DLM-32 medium-speed diesel engines (3,000 horsepower / 600 rpm). Attention is paid to reducing underwater radiation noise so as not to interfere with the ultrasonic waves used for communication with the deep-sea submersible research vehicle, and as an anti-vibration measure, the main engine is installed via a V-shaped anti-vibration rubber. It has been, as a power source, three main generators (output 740 kW) powered by a diesel engine and one emergency generator (output 64 kW) were installed.

Equipment
Positioning/terrain survey
Since the operational capability of the "Shinkai 6500" is of the utmost importance on this ship, a dive support system has been constructed centered on each device related to positioning and topographic surveys. For positioning, a high-precision navigation system and an acoustic navigation system were installed. The high-precision navigation system has a high-precision positioning function by integrated processing of NAVSTAR / GPS satellite positioning system, Loran C and Decca navigation information, and controls the autopilot by comparing with a preset planned navigation system. , It also has an automatic navigation function. It also later supported Differential GPS . On the other hand, the acoustic navigation system consists of a transponder installed on the seabed, a responder equipped with the "Shinkai 6500", a transmitter/receiver array on the bottom of the ship, and a processing device on board. The positioning methods are the super short baseline (SSBL) method and the long baseline (LBL) method. The submarine transponders are equipped with two types, a 7 kHz band for deep depths and a 14 kHz band for medium depths, and can handle up to a maximum depth of 11,000 meters.

A multi-beam echo sounder (MBES) is installed on the bottom of the ship for seafloor topography surveys. Initially, it was requested to install an American-made sea beam like "Kaiyo", but due to budgetary reasons, it was decided to be Furuno Electric's HS-10. Then, in 1998, it was replaced with the same Sea Beam 2112.004 as the KAIREI and MIRAI built during this period.

It is also equipped with onboard gravimeters, proton magnetometers, and three-component magnetometers for other geodetic and geoelectromagnetic surveys.

Geological and geological survey.

In addition to the collection by the "Shinkai 6500" below, the ship itself is also able to collect geological samples with a piston corer and seafloor samples with various mud collectors and dredges

In addition, the sub-bottom profiler (SBP), which is a subsystem of MBES, can be used to obtain the strata near the surface layer of the seafloor, and the single-channel echosounder (SCS) can be used to explore the deep seafloor structure.

Onboard boat / machine

It is equipped with a sound wave communication device and an image receiver to and from the "Shinkai 6500", and plays the role of a control room that manages the investigation dive. In addition to a deep-sea multi-narrow beam sounder and precision acoustic positioning system, it will be equipped with a deep-sea survey towing system "Deep Toe" with a maximum operating depth of 4,500 m, which will also be used for the preliminary survey of the Shinkai 6500.

Since 1995, the ROV "Kaikou" has also been installed and operated for preliminary investigation and rescue of the "Shinkai 6500". However, since the significance of mounting it on the ship became less significant due to the change in the rescue system of the "Shinkai 6500", in 1997, the specialized mother ship KAIREI was able to fully demonstrate the research capabilities of the "Kaikou". Was built and relocated there. After that, it began to support the operation of the deep-sea cruise probe "Urashima" developed by JAMSTEC
2021 In active service.
