MURECK BOAT MILL

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Oct 18, 2021 7:34 pm

1200 years ago there were already water-treading bicycles for irrigation purposes in Mesopotamia. 1000 years later, running water was used to drive such wheels. The idea of using the power of water to drive a mill soon came up. 25 BC A Roman engineer already describes a water mill that resembles a farmer's mill. When the Ostrogoths shut down Rome's water supply and thus the water mills around 500 years later, the Romans made do with ship mills on the Tiber. In later times there were many ship mills on the Danube, Rhine, Drau, and other rivers. 150 years ago there were 43 on the Mur in the Radkersburg area! The increasing concentration on large mills eventually let the small ones fall into disrepair. In many places, including in Mureck, traditional associations have emerged restore the old mills or build new ones based on old models, as in Mureck. Today wheat, spelled wheat, and rye are ground there with peel and germ from organic cultivation and sold directly from the mill. When you are exhausted, you will be pampered with Styrian specialties in the Mühlenhof, which will also house the special post office. The brand that radiates nature comes from Maria Schulz, the engraving from Prof. Wolfgang Seidel.
