MOTOR TORPEDO BOAT BY THE LANDING IN SALERNO IN 1943

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Nov 04, 2021 2:53 am

The stamp issued by the USA shows us a motor torpedo-boat (PT) of the USA Navy, who took part in Operation Avalance in September 1943 near Salerno.
The stamp shows not a number on the bow, that it could be any PT boat.
I found that the torpedo-boats used by this landing were in TG 80.2 in Squadron 15 under command of Commander. S.M. Barnes. One boat was mentioned as PT 204 who took part in these landings, if she is depicted is doubtful but she was a 78 ft Higgens Motor Torpedo Boat, and most probably all the 18 boats of Squadron 15 were of the same class.

Squadron 15 was the first PT squadron that was sent to the Mediterranean.

78Ft Higgins motor torpedo boat was built by the Higgins Industries in New Orleans, LA for the USA Navy.
Displacement 56 tons, dim. 78 x 20.8 x 5.3ft. (draught)
Propulsion: Three 1,500shp Packard W-14 M2500 gasoline engines, three shafts. Speed 41 knots.
Armament: One 40mm mount, four 21" torpedoes, two twin .50 cal. machine guns, one .30 cal. machine gun and one 20mm mount
Crew 17.
