“VOORLICHTER”(1869-1886)- Dutch Clipper

The frigate-rigged clipper “Voorlichter” was built by Jan Smit Fzn (see stamps) in 1869 for his own account. Its dimensions: Length: 71,3m; Width:13,45m; Weight:2034 tons. After his death his widow inherited the ship. In 1882 J. Koning from Rotterdam bought the “Voorlichter” for fl.90 000. Sipkes became its captain. After 4 years of operation, in the end the ship was declared unfit in 1886 at Cheribon, Java, and sold for demolition to an Arab for fl. 6100. Its dimensions: Length: 71,3m; Width:13,45m; Weight:2034 tons.
