“ARGO” (1853- 1872)- Dutch clipper- schooner

Soon after the construction of “Cosmopolitan” (see viewtopic.php?t=17928), Other companies followed Gebr.Blusse.
Some clipper ships were purchased from abroad, but most were built in Dutch shipyards. Other famous clippers were built, like the «Noach» (see: viewtopic.php?p=17322),«Batavier» (see: viewtopic.php?t=17929), “Thorbecke” (see: viewtopic.php?t=17932),“ Voorlichter” (see:viewtopic.php?t=17930) etc.
Over the years, different numbers of clippers have been registered in the Netherlands. There was probably a difference of opinion in the definition of the clipper. Maybe ships are called clippers when they were were full rigged, but there were other rigs too. In 1853 for example, the "Argo" was launched as a 4-masted Jackass-barque.
A four-masted jackass barque is square-rigged on the two foremost masts (fore and main masts) and fore-and-aft rigged on the two after masts (the mizzen and spanker or jiggermasts). Some 19th century sailors called such a ship "a fore-and-aft schooner chasing a brig". In general a jackass barque is a sailing ship which is half square-rigged and half fore-and-aft rigged.
The“Argo”,built in 1853 by the illustrious company of Anthony van Hoboken on shipyard “Rotterdams Welvaren”,was the first four-masted clipper-schooner, based on the so-called Baltimore-model, in the Netherlands. Its dimensions: Length: 44,8m; Width:10,04m; Weight:537 tons.
The”Argo”was intended for traveling in Chinese and East Indian waters and was easy manueuvrable. The Hobokens were owners of the ship till 1870. In 1872 it was sold to German shipping company.
