The “Phillips van Marnix” was a Dutch merchant ship, medium clipper, that made several journeys between the Netherlads and the Dutch East Indies. Built in 1863 by the company of the Brothers Pot in Bolnes, it was first so-colled composite-built clipper. Its dimensions: Length: 58,44m; Width:11,21m; Weight:1516 tons.
Composite-building was one of the answers of the Dutch shipbilders in neighbourhood of Rotterdam to the economic depression of 1857 and following years. Parts of the ship were made of iron, while other parts were still produced in wood and other traditional materials. The hull and the rigging of the “Phillips van Marnix” were sold at Mauritius in 1878 after the ship had been severely damaged in heavy weather during a return journey from Batavia. The cargo of coffee and arak also was sold.
The Clipper is named after Philips van Marnix, Dutch writer and statesman.
