“SOOLOO” - fregate of Salem (1861)

“Sooloo’ Rig: Wood 3-mast ship Launched: 1861. Built: Boston: John Taylor for the firm Silsbee and Pickman Dimensions: 164.6’x 34.6’x 23’ Tonnage: 962.74 tons The name “Sooloo” may be confusing to twenty-first century readers. Were it spelled Sulu the name would be much more recognizable. The firm of Silsbee and Pickman specialized in trade to the Far East, in particular the hemp trade to the Philippines. Other ships in the fleet included “Panay” and “Mindoro”—both of which were named for geography from the Philippine archipelago. Conceived as war clouds gathered on the American horizons, “Sooloo” was lucky to escape the slaughter inflicted by Confederate raiders on Northern shipping. Despite intents, “Sooloo’s” first voyage was to San Francisco—but the ship was a regular visitor to Anjer, Singapore, Surabaya, Cebu, Iloilo, Manila, Hong Kong and many other ports of call.
In 1864 sailed from Melbourne to Calcutta in ballast in 36 days. Believed to have been the fastest passage to date.
In 1866 grounded on a reef off Java on voyage from Manila to Boston. Was able to get off and reach Batavia where she was repaired.
In 1887 on a voyage back to Boston, “Sooloo” collided in a fog with the schooner “Messenger”. “Messenger” received little damage from the impact, but “Sooloo” was essentially dismasted, but was able to sail under jury rig to Gay Head from where she was towed to Boston. Underwriters wrote the ship off, and it was sold to a towing company for use as a barge, cut down to a schooner rigged. “Sooloo” sank in a storm in 1892 on Pollock Rip Shoal .
