TREMANNING Gotland boat

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Apr 07, 2022 8:27 pm

Sailing boat from Gotland (so-called tremanning) gotlandssnipa
Tremanning: ... These boats did justice to the special characteristics of the island of Gotland. They were suitable for fishing on the open sea and especially for landing on shallow beaches, as the island lacked natural harbors in many places.
TREMANNING - big boats
The tremanning (three-man boat) - also called the big boat - was generally 7-8 meters long and 1.8-2.0 meters wide, with a depth 0.8m. The number of sails was usually seven and the crew three to four men. Used on the southeast coast of Gotland, between Rone and Hamra, and on the southwest coast, tremanning of larger dimensions has been built, upwards of 30 to 35 feet.
Lightly built with narrow clinker planking. Sharp ends, strongly curved stem, and sternpost. Rounded bottom, deep keel, soft turn of the bilges. Open; strong sheer toward the ends; outboard rudder; long tiller. The 3 man boat steps 3 unstayed masts through the thwarts. Sprit-rigged staysail to stemhead; sometimes spirit topsails on the main and foremast. In the brisk wind, the mainsail may be dropped and the smaller mizzen substituted.
Mostly now the tremanning boats are motorized.
These boats were jointly owned by several farms. Each boat usually had three owners, who had specific places and tasks onboard. The frontmen rowed when setting and pulling the fishing gear, the middlemen laid out the nets and pulled them. Bakkalen was considered the most importand in the boat team because he sat at the helm and sailed the boat.
