DEZHNEV S. I.- Russian traveler, navigator

Post by Anatol » Sat May 07, 2022 7:35 pm

Semyon Ivanovich Dezhnev is a famous Russian traveler, navigator and discoverer. Among the main achievements of his activity, the following can be distinguished: exploration of the Siberian part of Russia, the discovery of the Kolyma River as part of the expedition, as well as sailing along the entire Bering Bay.
The traveler was born in 1605 in a simple peasant family. The place of birth is not known for certain, as is the rest of the information about Dezhnev's childhood and youth, however, researchers have suggested that he was born either in Penega or in Veliky Ustyug.
Semyon began his military service at the age of 25. The first place of conscription was the city of Tobolsk, after - Yeniseisk. Initially, he served as a simple Cossack, after which he became the head of the detachment.
In 1641, Dezhnev arrived at the disposal of the military leader Stadukhin, with whom he made an expedition to the delta of the Kolyma River, which until then had not been explored by any of the travelers, after which he set off on his way to the Bering Strait. As you know, six of the seven ships were destroyed by a storm and bad weather, and the remaining one, on which Semyon Ivanovich himself was, was divided into two parts. He and 25 other sailors washed up on the shores of the Olyutorsky Peninsula. Only three months later the team was able to reach the lower part of the Bering Strait - Anadyr. Judging by the records of the navigator himself, the Cossacks were hungry, frozen, and many did not even manage to survive in harsh conditions. However, the goal was achieved, even at the cost of the lives of most of the people of the expedition assembled initially.
Dezhnev continued his service off the coast of the Bering Strait until 1660, being engaged in food affairs, fishing and trade. In the indicated year he was replaced, and he himself set off on a long journey to Moscow. Crossing the Kolyma River, the Lower Lena, the city of Yakutsk, Zhigansk, he paved the way to the capital. It took Semyon Ivanovich four whole years. Only in 1664 did he set foot on Moscow soil. Here he sold everything accumulated in the Far East, received cash rewards and the rank of Cossack chieftain.
Dezhnev returned to Siberia in the late 60s of the 17th century. In 1673, the navigator and traveler died.
In honor of the famous Russian discoverer, an island, a strait, a cape were named, and at the end of the 20th century a monument was erected to him in the city of Veliky Ustyug.
