BANGKONG TRADITIONAL WATERCRAFT

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jul 03, 2022 9:01 pm

Malaysia issued 2022 two stamps and a miniature sheet depicting traditional watercraft.
The 30 Sen stamp shows us the “Bangkong” of which “Aak to Zumbra a Dictionary of the World’s Watercraft gives:

Used in East Malaysia: Very long heavy plank-extended dugout canoe, used on Sarawak rivers by the Sea Dayak people. Square overhanging ends; planking terminates short of each ends in a square breakwater. On early boats, each plank had a ledge on which succeeded planks were lashed with rattan. The Chinese adaptation has a square-raked bow that sweeps up sharply. Awing covers all or part of the hull (as seen on stamp). May be fancifully painted. Paddled. Length over 15m. These were used for war and piracy (the bangkong or perau pengayau are reported to have carried as many as 80 warriors who stood atop the long flat roof that covered most of the hull. 60 – 80 men might paddle below but the average was ca 30 men. May have employed a rudder in addition to paddles. Plank extensions are sewn on a tall curved stern, low overhanging bow on which brass swivels were placed. Reported lengths 21 – 30m, e.g., length 30m, beam 3m.
