RODRIGUE trawler 1962

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Feb 19, 2023 8:33 pm

Built as a fishing trawler under yard no 48 by the French yard of SICCNA in Saint-Malo for Société de Péche et de congelation (SPEC) in St Pierre et Miquelon.
09 December 1961 launched as the RODRIGUE.
Tonnage 243.5 grt, dim. 36.9 x 7.8m., lpp 32.2m.
Powered by a diesel engine with 750 hp. speed 12.5 knots.
1962 Completed.

21 December 1963 rescued some of the crew of the French cargo vessel DOUALA,
The following I got from the book Shipwreck at St Pierre:
When a search aircraft sighted a lifeboat in position 46 24N, 58 30W, the pilot of the aircraft commented that “their fingers were frozen, and their feet covered with ice. They resembled motionless statues, their heads bowed in prayer”
The MV RODRIGUE, a St Pierre trawler, was directed to the spot and picked up two survivors and a body. A crew member from the trawler had to be perilously lowered in the lifeboat to help bring up the nearly lifeless bodies. These men were in even worse condition than their rescued mates rescued by the GILBERT earlier, this lifeboat was flooded.
The RODRIGUE had early picked up the first lifeboat of which the crew was rescued by the GILBERT, but two dead bodies were still in the boat. In the photo, you can see the lifeboat on the deck of the RODRIGUE.

The history of the trawler becomes then a little vague.
1963 Sold to Greece and renamed BATISS, while other sources give sold to Greece in 1978, not an owner is given.
If she is still around I could not find out, but most probably out of service or lost. IMO No 5401510.
