Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Feb 20, 2023 7:41 pm

Built as a destroyer by Schichau Werft in Elbing for the German Navy.
Launched as S-179. But not completed after the end of World War I
After the war under the yard, no 1044 was completed as a cargo vessel by the Weser Werft in Bremen as an auxiliary 4-masted schooner. Renamed in GEORG KIMME the incomplete hull was completed as a mercantile vessel and completed as the four-masted schooner GEORGE KIMME for the Bremerhaven Line (Bremerhavener Reederei AG) in 1920.
Tonnage 786 ton, net 588, dim lpp 61.4 x 9.1 x 4.82m. Fitted out with two auxiliary diesel engines, 40 nhp, twin screw, speed?
1920 completed, homeport Bremerhaven.

1926 Sold to O. Rathjen and renamed ANNELIESE RATHJEN, homeport Bremerhaven, Germany.
1928 Sold to La Morue Francaise in St Pierre et Miquelon, renamed ZAZPIAKBAT .
1936 Sold to Cie Generale de Grand Peche, St Pierre et Miquelon, not renamed but converted into a trawler.
During the second half of the 19th century, the Légasse family, originally from Bassussarry, had been present in Newfoundland since the 17th century, founder of the Compagnie la Morue française, the last company of cod fishermen in Labourd, (Labourd is one of the French Basque provinces. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labourd ) allowed the continuation of this fishery, from his last possessions in North America.
The Légasse brothers joined forces with other groups to found, in 1905, the Compagnie de Grande Pêche, which became the first company of its kind. In 1945, “Zazpiak bat”, the four-masted ship, the last flagship of the Légasse flotilla, disappeared in a fire in Marseille.

"ZAZPIAKBAT ", which literally means in Basque "the 7 are one", is the name of the traditional Basque crest, in reference to the seven provinces of the "Basque homeland".
Before its acquisition by Victor Pleven, the ZAZPIAKBAT belonged to the Société Anonyme des Armements Français coloniaux controlled by the Légasse family, whose registered office was in 2 place de la Liberté in Bayonne.
Built-in Germany, this 60 m-long steel-hulled sailboat has refrigerated rooms for bait and food.
The ZAZPIAKBAT was destroyed by a fire in Marseille in 1945.
Scuttled in position 43 24N 05.05 E on 21 August 44. This is different from 1945, but I read on a German website that she was scuttled by German forces, The German forces were not more in France in 1945. Her IMO no is 5605074.
