ICAJUTA or ICHARUTA canoe

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Mar 05, 2023 7:58 pm

Mexico issued three stamps in the tourism series in 1987, of which the 150 Peso stamp shows us fishing on Lake Patzcuaro in the Michoacan Province. The vessel shown on the stamp is an "icajuta” also written as icharuta. The fishing method is with a butterfly net. She is built mostly of fir wood

The icharuta is a small monoxyl vessel measuring between 2.5 and 6.5 m in length, rather narrow in shape, with a flat bottom and a flat, undifferentiated bow and stern. The thickness of the sides varies between 2.5 and 5 cm, depending on the size and use of the boat.
The icharuta can be maneuvered by a man or a woman using an oar that is taken home once the boat rests on the lake shore. From the ethnological point of view, these boats were used for related activities of a private nature, such as fishing, trade, or travel.
These are the boats that are still used by the butterfly farmers on the island of Janitzio
