Named for Willem Sligting, Makkum, christened by Hinke de Vries, co-owner and wife, in a multilingual fashion: English, Polish, and Friesian, and after the ceremony launched in the river Wisła. She is the largest brigantine in the world, as well as the largest two-masted sailing vessel, with an overall length of 61 meters (200 ft).
She carries a maximum of 1,300 square meters (14,000 sq ft) of sail, and with an air draft of 44 meters (144 ft) is one of the tallest of the tall ships. She has made regular appearances at major sailing events around the world and competes in at least part of the Tall Ships Race series every year.
The ship was during building fully equipped with GMDSS radio equipment for sea-area A3 and 2 main gensets from 40 kW each and an auxiliary genset in the foxhole
Swan fan Makkum was sold on February 6, 2006, to Italy and renamed ITALIA. She will continue to appear as a competitor in the Tall Ships Race, her first appearance as Nave Italia was in the 2007 Mediterranean series. She is now jointly operated by the Italian Navy and the Yacht Club Italiano.
After the sale of Swan fan Makkum, Willem Sligting and Hinke de Vries built a new tall ship: WYLDE SWAN (Wild Swan}.

Nave ITALIA (A-5314) is a brigantine schooner of the Tender to nave Italia Foundation, a non-profit organization formed by the Italian Navy and the Italian Yacht Club; the ship is registered in the rolls of the Italian military fleet and managed jointly between the two members of the foundation. Its purpose is the training of people with physical, mental, or social hardships through the so-called solidarity cruises.

Features
The unit is built in steel, with decks covered in wood, and is equipped with double cabins to accommodate 24 passengers in addition to the crew of 18. She is rigged as a brigantine schooner (with two masts) and has a fully rigged foremast with square sails and the main mast with gaff sail.

History
The vessel, launched at the Wiswa shipyard in Gdansk in 1993 for a Dutch company under the name SWAN FAN MAKKUM, was used as a charter to the Antilles (Carib); in 2007 she was purchased by the Tender Foundation and is managed by the Navy as regards the crew, made up of personnel in active service, while the operating expenses are managed directly by the foundation through donations.
The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors appointed, for its majority, by the Founders, which also has the task of approving the therapeutic, educational, and training projects proposed by a Scientific Committee which then manages them in the spirit of the inspiring principles of the Foundation.
