Post by aukepalmhof » Tue May 16, 2023 8:57 pm

James McHenry (1753 - 1816) was a Scotch-Irish American military surgeon, statesman, and a Founding Father of the United States. He was elected by the legislature to the Maryland Senate on September 17, 1781, and as delegate to Congress on December 2, 1784. McHenry initiated the recommendation for congress to form the Navy. In 1787, he was a Maryland delegate to and secretary of the Constitutional Convention, which drafted the United States Constitution. He served as United States Secretary of War from 1796 to 1800. Upon his death his wife wrote "… He was not a great man, but participated in great events and great men loved him, while all men appreciated his goodness and purity of soul."

JAMES McHENRY Liberty vessel: Most sources gives that she was by built Delta Shipbuilding Co, in New Orleans, but she was original built by J.A. Jones Construction Co in Brunswick Georgia.( Lloyds Register 1955/56 gives also built by Delta Shipbuilding Co.)
During the Second World War, The J.A. Jones Construction Company assembled Liberty Ships at the southern tip of the Brunswick peninsula. These Liberty ships transported supplies to soldiers in the European and Pacific theatres. in December 1944, the shipyard employees constructed seven ships in one month, setting an unbroken record. Working on Christmas Day for no pay, this accomplishment was no small feat as the facility only contained berths for six ships undergoing construction. Remains of the berths are visible at low tide from the Sidney Lanier Bridge.
