St.GALLEN (III)

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Feb 15, 2024 8:27 pm

Switzerland issued one stamp that 200 years ago the first steamboat service on Lake Constance commenced, The stamp shows not the first ship but the ST GALLEN.

In 1824, a steamboat travelled on Lake Constance for the first time. The WILHELM connected the Swiss municipality of Romanshorn with the German town of Friedrichshafen. While it transported only goods at first, passengers were later carried too. Currently, boats serve all three countries that border the lake – Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The stamp depicts the calm and peaceful atmosphere and beautiful nature that can be enjoyed from the boat.

The MS ST. GALLEN , which operates the SBS's main route together with the MS ZURICH, runs mainly on the longitudinal route, Rorschach-Romanshorn-Kreuzlingen-Mainau-Meersburg island to Unteruhldingen.
MS ST. GALLEN is also used for special trips and operated for several years (until 2006) as an advertising medium for  the “Strawberry Ship” and  “Landbier Ship” .

In the winter half of 2019/2020, MS ST. GALLEN will be completely renovated in the shipyard in Romanshorn and will receive a new engine system and a bow thruster to improve maneuverability.
In addition, the interior will be completely renovated.
On May 8th, 2021, a fire broke out in the engine room during a trip between Arbon and Rorschach. The crew notices heavy smoke and immediately heads for the Horn landing stage. The ship is evacuated there. The fire is extinguished by the CO² extinguishing system and the alerted fire department ventilates the engine room.
On July 30, 2023 , MS ST. GALLEN collided with a motorboat off Langenargen during a course from Rorschach to Romanshorn. No one was injured in the collision, the damage was approximately EUR 15,000. The motorboat driver had overlooked the passenger ship with priority.
