La GARONNE flute 1761

This stamp issued by St Pierre et Miquelon shows us the landing of the French troops and the appointed governor D’Angeac, the vessel depict on the stamp is the La GARONNE.

LA GARONNE: flute armed with 28 cannons, launched in Le Havre in 1761. With troops on board she sailed to Newfoundland on June 20, 1762, landed her troops on June 24, 1762 and captured HMS GRAMONT, the former French privateer COMTESSE DE GRAMMONT and several other ships. She destroyed around 450 British fishing boats worth over 1 million pounds.
After signing the peace treaty she returned to France via Spain.

In 1763 she brought the first governor of France, D’Angeac, to St. Pierre and Miquelon. The stamp shows the arrival of the governor. D’Angeac: He was appointed governor of the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon on July 1, 1763, following the Treaty of Paris, which allowed a garrison of 50 men at most.

With this crew, D’Angeac sailed from La Rochelle on board the LA GARONNE and took possession of St. Pierre and Miquelon for France.

La GARONNE was a fifth rate flute owned by the Kingdom of France, Royal Navy.
Built by Shipyard Normandy, Le Havre.

August 1760 keel laid down.

Displacement: 1,350 ton, burthen 650 ton, dim. 45.22 x 10.10 x 4.58m.
Armament: lower gun deck, 14 French pounder, upper gun deck 20 French pounder.
Crew: 9 officers and 184 men.
02 July 1761 acquired,
October 1761 commissioned, under command of Captain Francois Louis Poulin de Courval.

1763Under command of Courval with the mission of taking the new governor d’Angeac with his officers to the Islands of Saint Pierre et Miquelon.
1768 She made two cruises from Isle de France to Madagascar.
December 1770 was she wrecked.
