Post by shipstamps » Wed Jan 14, 2009 4:12 pm

Only 4-funnelled vessel ever owned by the IOM SS Company was the Ben-my-Chree (II) built in 1875 at the Barrow Shipbuilding Company's yard, a vessel of 1,192 gross tons, originally fitted with two funnels. Two additional funnels were fitted when 'she was re-boilered for the purpose of obtaining greater draught, She was sold in 1906. Until 1878 all the company's vessels were paddlesteamers; the small steamer Mona (II), introduced the screw. This vessel was used mainly for cargo carrying and for winter work, proving herself most suitable for the service and more economical than the larger paddlers. The Mona met an unfortunate end when run down and sunk while lying at anchor off the Mersey, during fog, in 1884. Built by Laird and Company, at Birkenhead, she had a gross tonnage of 526, on dimensions: 207 ft. (o.a.) x 26 ft. x 13 ft. 3 in.
