Hollybank and Kylix
I am informed by Lord Leathers that the two vessels depicted on the 1 dollar value stamp of the British Solomon Island issue, showing the port of Honiara, are the Hollybank of the Bank Line, and the Shell tanker Kylix. The Bank Line ship is alongside the wharf and was the first vessel to load copra at the new installation. The stamp is reproduced from a photograph taken on March 13, 1966.
The Hollybank was built by Wm. Doxford, at Sunderland, in 1962, and is a cargo vessel of 6,310 gross tons, length 487 ft. o.a., breadth 62 ft. 3M., draft 26 ft., speed 15 knots.
The Kylix was built by the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Mij. (Netherlands Dock and Shipbuilding Company) in 1955, at Amsterdam. Her gross tonnage is 12,119, deadweight 18,140, her overall length being 555 ft. 9 in. breadth 69 ft. 3 in., draught 29 ft. 9 in. Turbine driven, she has a speed of 14.5 knots.
