Antonin

Post by shipstamps » Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:32 am

On the 100 f. stamp is the 4-masted barque Antonin, the 30 L stamp showing the 3-masted barque Suzanne.
The Antonin was a steel barque built in 1902 by Atel et Chant. de France, Dunkirk, for the well-known owners A. D. Hordes and Son. Her sister ship was named Valparaiso, and both were engaged in the nitrate trade between France and Chile. In 1904 the Antonin sailed from Port Talbot on October 10 and reached Iquique on December 15, a passage of 75 days. This was a wonderful feat but one which she even bettered during the 1914-18 war, when she went from La Pallice (November 18, 1915) to Antofogasta (January 29, 1916)-only 72 days. The following year (1917) she was sunk by the German Seeadler. She was the fourth vessel in Bordes fleet to bear the name Antonin.

The owner was Bordes and not Hordes. Antoine-Dominique Bordes owns a large fleet of cape-horners, sailing between Chile and France.

Built in 1902 by Ateliers et Chantiers de France, Dunkirk, for Antoine Dominique Bordes & Fils, Paris, homeport Dunkirk.
4mast barque, Gt:3204, Nt:2418, L:95.52m. B:13.71m. D:7.36m. Rigged with royal sails over double top and topgallant sails.
On 03-02-1917 captured and sunk by the German raider SMS SEEADLER (commander Felix von Luckner) position 7ºN.36ºW., on voyage from Iquique to Brest.

In march 1917, the SMS SEEADLER captured the French barque CAMBRONNE in the South Atlantic, instead of sinking her, the Germans transferred 233 French prisoners, captured from earlier French ships (DUPLEIX, CHARLES GOUNOD, LA ROCHEFOUCAULD and the ANTONIN) Luckner let them freely depart to Rio de Janeiro, where they all safely arrived.

This stamp issued by Dahomey was designed by the French marine painter Roger Chapelet (1903 – 1995)
