WAKATAKE (ODD 23)

Built as a destroyer by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. Kobe for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
13 December 1921 laid down.
24 July 1922 launched as No. 2.
Displacement 820 ton., dim. 275 x 26½ x 8¼ft.
Powered by two Parsons geared steam turbines, 21.500 shp., twin screws, speed 31.5 knots. Steam was delivered by Kambon boilers.
Armament 3 – 4.7 inch., 2 M.G. 8 – 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 110.
30 September 1922 commissioned.

01 August 1928 renamed in WAKATAKE (DD23) (Young Bamboo).
When War broke out, at that time already outdated, she was stationed in the Kure Naval District a unit of the 13 Destroyer Squadron, and used for patrols in the Inland Sea, Bungoo Suido and W Kjushi.
From 10 April 1942 transferred to the 1st Escort Group, used for convoy duty to Formosa, Philippines, Singapore, Indochina and Palau.
30 March 1944 lost and sunk at Babelthaup Island, Palau after attacked by American planes.
