Korea

Post by shipstamps » Thu Sep 25, 2008 3:52 pm

In 1967 the South Korean postal authorities commemorated the current 5-year plan with an attractive stamp showing the motorship Korea at her loading berth. The Korea is owned by the Far Eastern Marine Transport Co., Ltd., of Inchon, Korea. She was built in 1938 by the Mitsubishi Jukogyo, Nagasaki, as the Kazuura Maru for the Mitsubishi Kisen K.K. and bought by her present owners about 1955.
Registered at Inchon, she has a gross tonnage of 6,820 and a length of 437 ft. 3 ins, overall, 58 ft. 6 ins, maximum breadth and a summer draft of 26 ft. 51/4 ins. Propelling machinery is a 6-cylinder Mitsubishi oil engine. In connection with this stamp, the South Korean Post Office issued an attractive first day cover reproducing the stamp design, which clearly shows the name of the ship, and a stiffener inside the envelope gave details of the 5-year plan and of the ship. Mr. L. Richards, a Sea Breezes reader, of Heswall, Cheshire, has shown me this envelope, which has made identification of the Korea possible.
