The Itala, shown on the 20t. stamp of Malawi, makes her second appearance on a postage stamp, an earlier issue of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, 1/3 value, of 1959, gave a very poor representation of the vessel. She was built by Yarrow, Scotstoun, Glasgow, in 1949, for Nyasaland Railways. After completion in sections, she was packed into 750 cases for reassembly at Chipoka. Lake Nyasa shore, after being brought from Beira by rail. After gaining independence on July 6. 1966, Nyasaland was renamed Malawi and the shipowners Malawi Railways.
The shipowners operate a passenger and cargo service on the lake, using four motor vessels, five tugs, 14 barges and a motor launch. The Tiala is a vessel of 620 gross tons, has accommodation for approximately 500 passengers; a crew of 38; and is diesel-engined. Cargo capacity is 90 tons. She works to a six-day schedule, calling at 11 ports and carries an estimated 130,000 passengers per annum. SG549
